Czech mates

Her Ladyship was growling for her breakfast this morning and sent His Lordship off on a hunting/gathering trip. He duly hopped on the bike and returned shortly afterwards with an impressive haul: three bread rolls, one poppy seed pastry (we are in poppy seed country here), four nectarines, a packet of butter and a fine lump of pâté. All for the princely sum of €3. We certainly won’t go hungry – or broke – in this neck of the woods!

The shop was called ‘Flop’. Flop: the one-stop shop. Where you can shop until you drop.

After breakfast the dynamic duo set off to Český Krumlov on their bikes. They had already cycled there yesterday evening to check out how far away it is (a mere 15 minute ride), but had to turn around fairly pronto as the light was fading. Her Ladyship should consider adding bicycle lights to her never-ending list of missing items. Then again… forget it! (She will.)

Český Krumlov is just beautiful. No wonder it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. I love the gables of the beautifully painted buildings, the narrow cobbled streets, the scale of the magnificent castle that is overlooking the whole town… I am at a loss for words when it comes to describing this amazing place. Tell you what, just take a look at the photos. His Lordship might even put up a few more for me later if I catch him in a good mood.

We all enjoyed watching the canoeists and kayak-ists (is that a word?) careering down the river that runs through (or, rather around) the old town in their droves, almost capsizing when negotiating the weirs. His Lordship was all on for hiring a canoe and joining in the fun, but Herself was having none of it. From what I gather, she still hasn’t forgiven him for all the dunkings in the River Dronne that she claims he was responsible for many years ago when they were still living in the Dordogne. She made it perfectly clear that launching herself down the river in a piece of plastic shaped like a banana and getting soaked in the process was not on her agenda for that day. Or on any future date in the forthcoming millennia.

So she got soaked on ‘dry’ land instead. It lashed rain.

Good excuse to duck into a tavern for a spot of goulash and a pint or two. We were lucky enough to happen upon one of the very few places that was not heaving with tourists. Most of the customers seemed to be locals which is always a good sign. Sure enough, the food was excellent and great value. The Oldies had a grand old chat with the owner. People are certainly very friendly here.

I’ve been making friends too, by the way. Check out my Czech mates!garden with path, numerous gnomes in background, large plastic stork and plant in large pot with plastic owlSeamus the Seagull on wooden garden table with large glass of beer, two horses, one white, one brown in field in background

  1. Dear Seamus!

Really, you are in Cesky Krumlov? The well-known Krumau?

    You will not believe it.
If you had been there one week ago, we would have met!!!
I was there exactly one week ago and I`m still very impressed by this lovely town.
The river Moldau meanders across as well as around the town.
It was also a great pleasure for me, my husband and two of our friends (with dog) to sit in a little café right on the riverside and to watch the canoeists.
I think it would be great fun for you to glide over the waves.

I detected also a connection between Graz and Krumau.
There are reproductions of a few paintings by Egon Schiele in the Egon Schiele Art Centrum in Krumau.
You can find the original of one of them in the “Neue Galerie” in Graz.

Our paths would have almost crossed as you can see!!!

Give my love to your dynamic duo,

    Traude

    1. What a pity our paths didn’t cross! And a pity I never got to go in a canoe, but herself cannot be persuaded. I’ll pass on your wishes to the oldies and hope we might meet up somewhere along the way… Love, Seamus
