Pottering around Paphos

Pottering around Paphos

Paphos and surroundings Thankfully, once the Oldies got those mosaics out of their system, they turned their attention to exploring our surroundings. Once again, they’d hit the jackpot with the rental apartment in Paphos. A really cool pad with a large balcony overlooking a communal pool. Nice! Best of all, it was only a short walk down to Paphos proper – and the sea! This town certainly has a touch of class and I, for one, never tired of our…

Border Hopping II

Border Hopping II

Schwarzenberg Logging Canal, Bohemian Forest Did I mention that Klaffer am Hochficht is a skiing area? Well, as you might know, I’m not exactly a fan of skiing, but as it was summer, I couldn’t really object to checking out the slopes. Border hopping

Border hopping

Tri-border Walk, Oberschwarzenberg After all the pomp and grandeur of ancient trading towns and monasteries, we have now gone back to nature. I was excited to learn that we were only a few kilometres from the Dreiländereck,…

Kicking up a stink in Schlierbach

Schlierbach Abbey, Upper Austria I’ve visited quite a few abbeys on our travels, but of course, each one is different and Schlierbach Abbey was no exception. On the tour, the Oldies appeared to be most taken by the small but beautiful library. Small, apparently, because a couple of centuries before it became a monastery, Schlierbach Abbey had been a convent. It seemed to be the attitude of the time that women didn’t need as much learning as men. Hah! Try…

In Vino Veritas

In Vino Veritas

Poysdorf Cellar Lanes Travelling from the Waldviertel (‘forest quarter’) to the Weinviertel (‘wine quarter’) in Lower Austria seemed a natural progression. Our next stop was Poysdorf in the heart of the Weinviertel. I certainly expected to see plenty of vineyards, of course. What caught me by surprise was the Kellergassen – lanes lined with wine cellars. I had never seen anything like this before. It was like Toytown with its rows of what looked like dinky, miniature houses. These wine…
