Spicy Szeged

Spicy Szeged

A day in Szeged, Hungary   Those Oldies do my head in. Talk about bad planning! They decide to visit Szeged, home of the world-famous Pick Salami factory and Paprika Museum on a Sunday, the one day of the week when the visitors centre is closed! To rub salt into the wound, they pick (ha! Get it?) one of the hottest days so far so there is no chance that His Lordship will even consider ordering a bowl of halászlé,…

Hot and arid Arad

Hot and arid Arad

Makó, Hungary and Arad, Romania   I wasn’t joking about the potholing! The first 100 km from Debrecen to Makó was a series of potholes, bumps, ruts and ridges. Flatness… finally!

Flatness… finally!

Debrecen and Hortobagy National Park We’ve moved on to the far east. The far east of Hungary, that is, close to the Romanian border. Beautiful beeches

Beautiful beeches

Bükki National Park, Hungary The Oldies did manage to drag themselves away from the spring waters and wine cellars of Eger in the end. With the temperatures remaining in the mid to high thirties, His Lordship suggested we head for the hills and go for a drive amongst the vineyards. Great. After Tokaji, we are in the best-known wine growing region of Hungary. But do you think His Lordship managed to find as much as a single grape? No prizes…

Bull’s blood and hot springs

Bull’s blood and hot springs

Eger, Hungary We’ve left the Danube far behind us, but we are still in the Hungarian hills. In fact, my owners have sniffed out a wine-growing area. Our new home for the next few days is the town of Eger, home of the ‘Eger Bull’s Blood’ and the Oldies have even managed to find a campsite directly in the ‘Valley of the Beautiful Woman’ with its 200-odd wine cellars. It is just as well that it is within walking distance…
